Iraq and US finalize September 30 deadline for coalition withdrawal

US military withdrawal Iraq sovereignty anti-ISIS coalition Ali al-Zaidi CENTCOM

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi and US Central Command Commander Admiral Brad Cooper have confirmed a final deadline of September 30 for the withdrawal of the US-led international coalition from Iraq. This timeline marks the conclusion of a military presence that began with the 2003 invasion. Officials state that by October 1, Iraq will be free of foreign military presence, signaling a new phase of national sovereignty and security.

The withdrawal process is already underway, with reports indicating that US troops and equipment began a drawdown from Erbil in the northern Kurdish region approximately three weeks ago. While most US bases in Iraq were vacated last year, the remaining forces have faced periodic attacks following the escalation of conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran in February.

As part of this transition, Prime Minister al-Zaidi emphasized that all weapons must be brought under exclusive state control to ensure stability and development. He also set a deadline for non-state armed groups to disarm by the end of September. The Iraqi security forces, including the Peshmerga, are expected to assume full responsibility for counter-terrorism operations following the coalition's departure.
