U.S. military reorganizes KFOR deployment in Kosovo

KFOR NATO U.S. Army Kosovo security military rotation

The U.S. Army Europe and Africa has announced a reorganization of its military presence in Kosovo as part of the NATO-led KFOR mission. This rotation involves transitioning from National Guard units to regular forces provided through overseas contingency operations structures.

The 2nd Cavalry Regiment and support units from the 1st Infantry Division will deploy to Kosovo, replacing the Florida National Guard's 53rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Additionally, the 1st Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade will replace the Colorado National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 135th Aviation Regiment.

This shift follows a structural review by Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) aimed at optimizing the KFOR mission. Officials stated the change reflects improved security conditions in the region and aligns with the NATO 3.0 model, where European allies assume primary responsibility for the mission while the U.S. maintains continued support.
