U.S. military reorganization in Kosovo KFOR mission

Overview

The U.S. military has begun reorganizing its presence in Kosovo as part of the NATO-led KFOR mission. Following a structural review by Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), the U.S. Army Europe and Africa announced a transition from National Guard units to regular active-duty forces. This shift is intended to optimize the mission and align with the “NATO 3.0 model,” in which European allies take primary responsibility while the U.S. provides continued support.

As part of this rotation, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment and support units from the 1st Infantry Division have deployed to replace the Florida National Guard’s 53rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Additionally, the 1st Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade has replaced the Colorado National Guard’s 2nd Battalion, 135th Aviation Regiment.

Colonel Jabari Miller has officially assumed command of the KFOR Multinational Brigade in the East at Camp Bondsteel. This marks the first time active-duty U.S. troops have led this command since September 2014. Command spokesperson Hunter Tate noted that the leadership change was driven by mission requirements and force availability.
