Donald Trump sparks tensions over Strait of Hormuz and NATO troop shifts

Donald Trump has sparked diplomatic tension following comments regarding the Strait of Hormuz. During a speech in New York, Trump suggested that the United States might declare the strategic waterway as U.S. territory following a conflict with Iran. While a White House official told the Wall Street Journal that Trump was joking and had not discussed such a plan with advisors, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi issued a sharp rebuttal, stating that the Strait of Hormuz ‘was, is, and will remain Iranian.’

Separately, the United States is reviewing its military presence in Europe. Leaked documents indicate that Washington is conducting a ‘loyalty’ assessment of NATO allies to determine their support for U.S. foreign policy and their spending with American defense contractors. This review coincides with planned troop movements, including the withdrawal of 5,000 soldiers from Germany and the deployment of 5,000 additional troops to Poland as a reward for its political alignment.
