Strait of Hormuz tensions escalate as US strikes Larak Island

Military tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated following a series of direct strikes. US Central Command (CENTCOM) conducted precision strikes on two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, located near the Strait of Hormuz. US officials stated the operation was intended to prevent the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from deploying sea mines in the vital waterway.

In response, the IRGC reported that the strikes caused casualties among military personnel and civilians on Larak Island. Iran subsequently launched retaliatory attacks, including ballistic missiles targeting US military bases in Jordan and suicide drones directed at an airbase in the United Arab Emirates. The Jordanian military reported intercepting eight missiles that entered its airspace.

The IRGC also claimed to have shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Strait of Hormuz. These developments have caused volatility in global energy markets, with Brent crude and WTI prices rising significantly due to increased supply-risk premiums in the region.
