US tanker aircraft depart Bulgaria's Bezmer Air Base

Two U.S. KC-135 aerial refueling tankers have departed the Bezmer Air Base in Bulgaria, ending a temporary deployment that had drawn significant geopolitical tension. The deployment, which was approved by the Bulgarian Parliament on July 22, was intended to support U.S. operations in the Middle East.

During their stay, the aircraft conducted training missions exclusively over allied airspace. Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov confirmed the departure and emphasized that the missions were for training purposes only, stating that Bulgaria has received no information regarding direct threats to its national security.

The presence of the tankers had drawn sharp criticism from Iran, which labeled the deployment as complicity in ‘aggression and war crimes.’ Reports from the Financial Times indicated that Tehran had considered potential strikes against targets in Bulgaria due to the presence of the aircraft. The deployment also sparked domestic protests from local residents who feared the base could become a target for Iranian missiles or drones.

In response to the heightened regional tensions, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte assured Bulgarian leadership that any attack on the country would be treated as an attack on the entire Alliance under Article 5.
