US Navy advances drone combat program and missile integration
The United States Navy is advancing several technological initiatives to enhance its carrier-based strike capabilities. Through the Naval Air Systems Command, the Navy has issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking defense contractors to propose autonomous combat aircraft for the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program. These unmanned platforms are intended to operate alongside manned aircraft to perform high-risk missions, providing increased range and lethality. The Navy requires two functional prototypes capable of operating from Gerald R. Ford and Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, including compatibility with catapult launches and arrested landings.
Simultaneously, the Navy is progressing with the deployment of the AGM-88G AARGM-ER, an extended-range anti-radiation missile designed to destroy advanced air defense systems. This missile will be integrated into the F-35 Lightning II, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, and EA-18G Growler. The AGM-88G features a new solid-fuel motor to increase its reach against mobile radar and air defense networks. For the F-35, the missile can be carried internally to maintain the aircraft’s stealth characteristics during high-risk operations.
