U.S. Navy aircraft carrier technologies strained by long deployments

Extended deployments of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers are placing significant strain on highly complex technological systems. The USS Abraham Lincoln, during a record-breaking deployment of over 230 days at sea, has highlighted the difficulties of maintaining advanced weaponry while operating at a high combat tempo.

Operating in combat zones for extended periods, including more than 10,000 sorties, increases the frequency of hardware breakdowns and complicates repairs because vessels cannot be easily taken out of service in port. Key stressors include increased operational hours on radar nodes and sensors, as well as accelerated wear and tear caused by prolonged exposure to seawater corrosion.
