Overview

In July 2026, the nuclear‑powered carrier USS Abraham Lincoln began launching F‑18 and F‑35 sorties from the Arabian Sea as part of heightened U.S.–Iran tensions.

By August, the ship had been at sea for 259 days following its November 21 departure from San Diego. During its fifth consecutive month of combat operations, families of the approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard reported deteriorating living conditions. These included moldy showers, broken toilets and laundry facilities, contaminated drinking water, and shortages of food and basic hygiene supplies.

Families expressed concerns that extreme exhaustion and poor sanitation could lead to mental health crises or operational errors on the flight deck. While the Navy previously noted that flight deck repairs were underway, officials have stated that a return date remains dependent on security conditions in the Strait of Hormuz. In response to the situation, Navy Under Secretary Hung Cao announced that a new destroyer group, led by the USS Theodore Roosevelt, will be deployed to the Middle East to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln.
