U.S. officials to declare end of record cyclosporiasis outbreak
Federal health officials are expected to declare the end of a massive cyclosporiasis outbreak that has sickened at least 11,458 people across 20 U.S. states. The outbreak, the largest of its kind on record in the United States, has resulted in 495 hospitalizations and two deaths.
Investigators traced the illness to shredded iceberg lettuce produced by Taylor Farms and grown in central Mexico. The contaminated produce reached various retail and food service operations, including major restaurant chains such as Taco Bell, Subway, and Yum! Brands locations. While Taylor Farms voluntarily recalled its products in mid-July, the outbreak had already spread significantly, with Michigan identified as a major epicenter.
The crisis has had notable economic consequences, including a 26% drop in sales for packaged salads and leafy greens. Yum! Brands also reported a meaningful near-term sales impact in its quarterly earnings due to the incident.
