US Plans to Admit 10,000 Additional White South African Refugees

The Trump administration has submitted a proposal to Congress to raise the United States’ annual refugee admissions ceiling from 7,500 to 17,500. The increase would be used exclusively to resettle roughly 10,000 white South Africans, described by officials as Afrikaners facing persecution. The plan continues to block refugees from other nations, with only a handful of non‑South African cases admitted in recent months.

Critics note the policy’s racial focus. Lebohang Pheko, a University of Johannesburg professor, said, "Whiteness is being recast as endangered," while Sharif Aly of the International Refugee Assistance Project warned that the expedited processing benefits only this single group, leaving "thousands of other people who have went through years of vetting" excluded.

The administration’s rationale – that Afrikaners experience genocide in South Africa – has been rejected by the UN Human Rights Office, and the move has drawn condemnation for echoing white‑only immigration preferences.
