U.S. pressures South Korean chipmakers to accelerate domestic memory investments
The United States government is increasing pressure on South Korean officials and major semiconductor corporations to accelerate investments in domestic memory chip production. U.S. officials have expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of previous investment commitments, specifically regarding the construction of DRAM wafer fabrication plants on American soil.
This tension follows South Korea's announcement of a massive 800 trillion won semiconductor cluster project in the Jeolla region. U.S. representatives have reportedly raised informal concerns that South Korea is prioritizing domestic semiconductor infrastructure while appearing hesitant to fulfill promised expansion plans in the United States.
In response, South Korean leaders and executives from Samsung Electronics and SK Group are preparing to engage in high-level negotiations. A new strategic investment plan, separate from a previously established $350 billion agreement, is expected to be officially announced in September. While both nations are pushing for closer cooperation to secure the global supply chain, experts note that the complexity of building modern DRAM facilities means significant supply-demand gaps may persist for several years despite new agreements.
