US professor murders brother‑in‑law in Hsinchu music shop, police shoot suspect
A 43‑year‑old American citizen who teaches at National Yang Ming Chiao Tong University entered a music shop on Sanmin Road in Hsinchu City on July 14. Armed with a blue‑handled knife, he stabbed his brother‑in‑law, store manager Mr Ji, more than 30 times, causing fatal injuries. Six adults and four children were also inside the premises at the time.
Police arrived at the scene, found the suspect behind a glass door holding the knife, and engaged in a standoff. Concerned for the trapped occupants and the wounded victim, officers fired four shots at the suspect’s legs, subduing and arresting him. The victim was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The suspect was taken into police custody for medical care.
Authorities confirmed the familial relationship between the assailant and the victim, describing the motive as still under investigation. The case has been forwarded to the Hsinchu District Prosecutors Office on murder charges.
