U.S. Public Overwhelmingly Backs AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Proposal
A June poll by research firm Verasight of 1,690 American adults found that 69 % support legislation that would require the country’s largest artificial‑intelligence firms to transfer half of their equity into a publicly owned sovereign‑wealth fund. The proposal, introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders and called the American AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act, aims to give taxpayers a direct ownership stake in AI companies and to ensure that the industry’s profits are shared broadly rather than concentrated among shareholders. Respondents said the fund would help redistribute AI‑generated wealth and give the public a say in how AI firms operate. The poll also showed strong demand for stricter federal oversight of AI companies, with majorities favoring government authority to block risky AI systems and require safety disclosures. The findings reflect growing public concern over tech‑sector layoffs, record AI investment, and the perceived mismatch between corporate profits and workers’ job security.
