U.S. renewable energy and battery storage grew by 88.7 GW

Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) indicates significant growth in renewable energy and battery storage during the first eighteen months of the Trump administration. Between January 2025 and July 2026, renewables and battery storage expanded by 88.7 GW, while fossil fuels and nuclear power grew by only 2.6 GW.

In the first seven months of 2026, renewable-generated electricity grew by nearly 11%, accounting for more than 29% of total U.S. electrical generation. This growth was driven primarily by utility-scale solar, which increased by 22.0%, followed by small-scale solar at 12.6%, hydropower at 9.0%, and wind at 5.9%.

In contrast, coal-generated electricity fell by 10.2%, while natural gas and nuclear power saw much slower growth rates of 1.8% and 1.5%, respectively. Solar energy has emerged as a leading renewable source, producing nearly as much electricity as wind and hydropower combined.
