U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree probes ICE hiring after Maine shooting

U.S. Representative Chellie Pingree sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin requesting details about the immigration enforcement operation in Biddeford, Maine, that resulted in the death of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero. The letter asks whether the ICE officer who fired, David Brouillette, was wearing a body‑camera, what training he had received, and why no body‑camera footage exists.

Pingree also pressed for information on ICE’s hiring practices, noting that DHS reported hiring 12,000 new officers and agents in less than a year. She wants to know what background‑check data are considered, what disqualifies an applicant, and the typical time between application and hire. The Representative cited concerns raised by the shooter’s ex‑wife about his mental health and a history of violent behavior. She expects a response by July 24 and a briefing on any policy changes under review.
