U.S. retail returns projected to reach $850 billion in 2025

U.S. retail returns are projected to reach approximately $850 billion in 2025, with online return rates estimated at 19.3 percent, according to research by the National Retail Federation and Happy Returns.

Industry experts suggest that retailers are misframing returns as mere cost centers or transportation problems. Instead, returns should be viewed as a critical pre-purchase conversion factor and a driver of brand loyalty. Data indicates that 82 percent of consumers consider free returns an important factor when shopping online.

A key challenge in reverse logistics is time-to-disposition: the speed at which a company can determine a returned product's value and assign it an economic path. Because returned items are depreciating assets—particularly in fashion and electronics—delays in processing can lead to stranded inventory and lost margins.
