Australia and US report August inflation data

Australia and the United States reported divergent inflation trends in August. In Australia, headline CPI rose to 4.0% annually, up from 3.5% in July, driven largely by increases in housing (5.7%) and transport (5.6%), including a 14.8% surge in automotive fuel prices. However, underlying inflation remained stable, with the annual trimmed mean rate holding at 3.6%. This follows the Reserve Bank of Australia's recent decision to raise the cash rate to 4.6%.

In the United States, the Federal Reserve's preferred Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index rose 3.4% annually in August, which was lower than the 3.7% economists had forecasted. Core PCE, excluding food and energy, rose 3.0% annually. Despite the cooler inflation reading, consumer spending remained resilient, increasing by 0.9% in August. The softer inflation data has led markets to reduce expectations for further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve in the near term.
