Marco Rubio to Host Global Summit on Political Violence in Washington

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will convene a ministerial summit on 15 July in Washington to address a perceived resurgence of political violence and terrorism. The meeting is slated to include representatives from more than 60 nations across the Western Hemisphere, Europe and Asia.

The summit follows President Donald Trump’s May‑signed counter‑terrorism strategy, which targets groups the administration describes as “violent, secular political groups whose ideology is anti‑American, radically transgender or anarchist.” A State Department official said the existing counter‑terrorism framework “needs an update to deal with the reality of such threats” and to protect U.S. citizens and national security. The gathering aims to coordinate the identification and neutralisation of such threats worldwide.

Rubio’s initiative is presented as a core element of the broader U.S. effort to modernise international security cooperation and to align partner nations around the administration’s definition of political terrorism.
