US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visits Reliance refinery in Jamnagar

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio conducted a tour of the Reliance Industries refinery complex in Jamnagar, Gujarat, the world’s largest single-site oil refining facility. Accompanied by US Ambassador Sergio Gor and members of the Ambani family, including Mukesh and Anant Ambani, the visit focused on advancing bilateral energy, trade, and defense cooperation.

During his visit, Rubio advocated for India to increase the processing of heavy crude oil from the Western Hemisphere, specifically mentioning Venezuela. He noted that the Jamnagar facility is technically equipped to handle ultra-heavy crude such as Venezuela’s Merey 16. Rubio described India as a “refining superpower” and emphasized that diversifying energy supplies could benefit both nations' national security and economic stability.

In addition to the refinery tour, the visit included discussions on Reliance’s new energy giga-factories, data centers, and the Vantara wildlife conservation center. Rubio’s broader trip to India also involved high-level meetings in Mumbai with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss strategic partnerships, defense technology, and the progress of a proposed bilateral trade agreement.
