US Secretary of State Rubio says Gulf allies key to advancing Iran peace framework

US Secretary of State Marko Rubio told reporters that Washington is working with its Gulf partners, especially the United Arab Emirates, to push forward a diplomatic framework aimed at a peace deal with Iran. He said recent talks have laid a solid foundation but many issues remain, noting that the United States understands the commitments Iran has made despite some public disagreements.

Rubio warned that if Iran does not follow through, the US President will have to make decisive choices. He emphasized that the Gulf states’ support is crucial, describing the UAE as one of Washington’s strongest partners in the region. The discussion is still in early stages of a conflict that has lasted 47 years, and progress on the framework will affect any future economic opportunities linked to Iran’s decisions and broader security concerns.

He also highlighted that Iran‑backed proxy groups will continue to pose a threat as long as they launch missiles and drones from Iraq, and that negotiations over Lebanon and Israel must be treated separately. Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Rubio reiterated that under international law the waterway must remain open and free of tolls or fees.
