US Secretary Rubio signals progress on Iran talks and Hormuz opening

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters in New Delhi that the United States and India have made "significant" progress in talks aimed at a new framework with Iran. He said a draft agreement to open the Strait of Hormuz to commercial traffic without fees and to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions could produce "good news" within hours, though no final deal has been reached.

Rubio and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar highlighted broader gains in their bilateral relationship, citing expectations of a sustainable trade pact and cooperation on migration and visa issues. Jaishankar reaffirmed the strategic partnership between the two nations and called for continued stability in the Middle East.

Both officials stressed that any resolution would require Iran’s acceptance of the framework and noted that the United States remains committed to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
