US sees Salmonella and Cyclospora Outbreaks Linked to Chili and Lettuce

A Salmonella outbreak linked to Mexican chili has sickened 345 people across 27 U.S. states, with 36 hospitalizations and no deaths reported. The contaminated peppers, traced to a farm in Sinaloa, Mexico, were distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors and used by restaurant chains such as Chipotle and Qdoba. The FDA and CDC have ordered a recall of the remaining product.

Separately, a Cyclospora cayetanensis outbreak tied to bagged lettuce from Taylor Farms has produced more than 22,000 cases nationwide, including two deaths, making it the largest recorded U.S. Cyclospora incident. Michigan accounts for the highest number of cases. The FDA has launched a cross‑state investigation and Taylor Farms is recalling the implicated lettuce, while Taco Bell has halted its use.

Both outbreaks are being monitored by the CDC and FDA, highlighting ongoing concerns about fresh produce safety in the United States.
