US Seismologist Chen Youlin Detained in China

Chen Youlin, a U.S. citizen and Chinese‑born seismologist, was detained by Chinese security officials at a Beijing airport in May 2024 while returning to Boston. Chinese authorities have charged him with espionage, alleging his research on North Korean nuclear tests for the U.S. government poses a security threat. His family and U.S. officials have repeatedly called for his release. The U.S. State Department has directly raised the case with Chinese officials, and former President Donald Trump mentioned it during his 2023 visit to Beijing. Senator Edward Markey and other lawmakers have urged the Chinese government to free Chen, while nonprofit groups such as Global Reach and the Foley Foundation have highlighted his deteriorating health, noting significant weight loss and lack of medication for chronic conditions during his detention. China’s foreign ministry has neither confirmed nor denied the detention, stating that the country follows the rule of law. The case underscores the heightened risks faced by scientists involved in work deemed sensitive by Beijing and adds another point of tension in the already fragile U.S.–China relationship.
