U.S. Senate passes bill targeting forced organ harvesting in China

The United States Senate has unanimously passed the Falun Gong and Victims of Forced Organ Harvesting Protection Act (S. 4009). The bipartisan legislation aims to hold individuals and entities accountable for involuntary organ extraction, a practice that whistleblowers and investigations, such as the London-based China Tribunal, have linked to state-sanctioned abuses in China.

If enacted into law, the bill would move beyond mere congressional condemnation by providing the executive branch with specific mandates. These include investigating China’s transplant system, identifying foreign individuals implicated in forced organ harvesting, and imposing financial and immigration sanctions against those involved.

The legislation specifically addresses the targeting of marginalized groups, including Falun Gong practitioners and Uyghur Muslims. While the Senate has approved the measure, it must now move to the House of Representatives for further action before it can be sent to the president to be signed into law.
