US Senate pushes key bills and nominations before August recess

Senators have less than a day to act before the Senate adjourns for a five‑week August recess that runs until September 14. Republican leaders are prioritising a continuing resolution to fund the federal government through Dec. 11 and avoid an October shutdown, as well as confirming President Donald Trump’s nominee Todd Blanche as Attorney General and advancing a large package of more than 75 other presidential nominations.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune warned that procedural hurdles and the need for a time‑agreement – a procedural shortcut that speeds debate – could push some votes into the following week. Democrats are using their leverage to withhold such agreements, creating uncertainty over whether the Senate will finish its agenda before the break. Senator Shelley Moore Capito expressed optimism that the core items will be completed, noting that the Senate has already confirmed over 590 civilian nominees, a record for the Trump administration.

If the time‑agreement is not secured, the schedule could extend past the planned recess, potentially affecting campaign timelines for midterm candidates.
