US Senate funding and AG nomination push
Overview
In early August 2026 the Senate moved forward on a continuing resolution to fund the government through Dec. 11 and advanced President Donald Trump’s nominee Todd Blanche for attorney general. Committees also progressed autonomous‑vehicle legislation. Senate leaders warned that procedural steps, especially securing a time‑agreement, had to be resolved before the chamber adjourned for a five‑week August recess beginning Aug. 6.
On Aug 5 senators pressed to finish the agenda, emphasizing the need to avoid an October shutdown and to confirm Blanche along with more than 75 other presidential nominations. Democrats withheld a time‑agreement, while Republican leaders expressed optimism; Senator Shelley Moore Capito noted the record of confirming over 590 civilian nominees.
By Aug 8 the schedule was further accelerated. Leaders outlined a plan to vote through the night on the continuing resolution, Blanche’s confirmation, and the SAVE America voter‑identification bill introduced by Sen. Jon Husted, as well as other measures such as the Protect College Sports Act. A group of senators, led by Sen. Mike Lee, formally objected to the compressed timetable. The race to clear these items before the recess continues to shape the legislative calendar and could impact upcoming midterm campaigns.
