US Senate Republicans urged to force continuing resolution to prevent shutdown

Senate Democrats are perceived as preparing to use government‑shutdown tactics ahead of the fiscal year 2027 funding deadline, repeating strategies that forced a 43‑day shutdown last year. Republicans, fearing a repeat, are being advised to bring a clean continuing resolution (CR) to the floor immediately after the Independence Day recess and to keep the Senate in session through August if necessary.

By moving a CR forward in mid‑July, Senate Republicans could demonstrate that Democrats are driving the shutdown threat and could then employ additional procedural measures, such as forcing full appropriations bills onto the floor or using a talking filibuster, to keep the government funded and avoid the political fallout of a shutdown before the 2026 midterm elections.
