U.S. Senators urge Secretary Rubio to address student visa delays

A group of 30 U.S. senators, led by Independent Senator Angus King, has called on Secretary of State Marco Rubio to address significant delays in the processing of student and exchange visitor visas. The senators expressed concern that if the current situation is not resolved, many students may be unable to arrive in the United States before the start of the new academic session.

The group specifically requested the timely processing of F, M, and J visa applications, noting a lack of available visa appointments at several U.S. embassies and consulates. In a letter to the State Department, the senators urged the department to prioritize interviews and processing for student applicants, increase interview waivers for verified returning students, ensure adequate staffing, and provide greater transparency to applicants and educational institutions.

The senators highlighted the economic importance of international students, noting they contribute approximately $43 billion annually to the local economy and supported over 355,000 American jobs during the 2024-25 academic year. They warned that failure to resolve these issues could negatively impact the education system and the influx of global talent and expertise.
