U.S. shifts from praising to indicting former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández

During his 2014‑2022 tenure, Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández was repeatedly lauded by U.S. officials as a key anti‑drug ally. Figures such as General John F. Kelly, Vice President Mike Pence, the DEA and the Department of Homeland Security publicly praised his cooperation in curbing cocaine trafficking.

Three weeks after Hernández left office in January 2022, the Biden administration’s Department of Justice indicted him in New York on charges of drug trafficking, bribery and conspiracy, alleging he turned Honduras into a narco‑state. The indictment contradicts the earlier U.S. narrative and has led to a 45‑year prison sentence based largely on uncorroborated testimony from cooperative witnesses.
