U.S. shipyards in Alaska and Washington receive federal maritime grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) has awarded federal grants to several shipyards in Alaska and Washington to modernize equipment and expand capacity.

In Alaska, Seward-based Catalyst Marine Engineering, LLC and JAG Alaska Inc. were awarded a combined $2.3 million through the Small Shipyard Grant Program. Catalyst Marine Engineering will use the funds to acquire advanced fabrication and welding equipment, while JAG Alaska will expand its rail system and acquire new vessel-moving equipment. These upgrades aim to prepare Seward for the homeporting of a new Arctic Security Cutter.

In Washington, Everett Ship Repair, LLC and Rozema’s Boat Works Inc. secured $1.3 million in grants. Everett Ship Repair will use $456,216 for electrical upgrades to support its 35,000-ton floating drydock and for staff training. Rozema’s Boat Works received $938,176 for metal fabrication equipment, including a CNC router table and a CNC press brake.
