US Smartphone Market Q1 2026: Apple Holds 60% Share as Samsung Slips, Memory Shortage Looms

The first quarter of 2026 saw a modest 3 % year‑on‑year decline in US smartphone shipments. Apple retained roughly 60 % of shipments, while Samsung's share fell to about 24 % after a 5 % drop. Motorola was the only major Android brand with double‑digit growth, posting an around 18 % increase. Premium devices slipped slightly, whereas entry‑level phones rose about 8 % driven by prepaid plans and price‑sensitive buying.

Industry analysts attribute the slowdown to a tightening memory‑chip market that has driven component costs higher and depleted inventory buffers. About 284 million phones were produced in Q1 2026, down 1.7 % from the same period in 2025. Forecasts suggest total 2026 production could drop 16.2 % to roughly 1.051 billion units. Samsung and other Android makers such as Oppo, Xiaomi and Vivo are seen as most vulnerable, while Apple appears better positioned to absorb the price pressure.
