Two U.S. Soldiers Killed in Iranian Missile and Drone Attack on Jordan Base

The U.S. Department of Defense identified the two service members killed when Iranian ballistic missiles and drones struck the Muwaffaq Salti air base in Jordan on July 17‑18, 2026. 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and Private Isabella Gonzales, 19, from Carrollton, Texas, were serving in the U.S. Army’s air and missile defense commands when the attack destroyed modular housing on the base. The deaths are the first U.S. combat fatalities from direct Iranian fire since the war began in February 2026 and bring the overall U.S. death toll in the conflict to 17.

A third U.S. service member remains missing, with unidentified remains recovered at the site. A separate incident in northern Iraq saw a U.S. service member killed during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone, and another soldier sustained minor injuries. The Pentagon has announced retaliatory airstrikes against Iranian military targets in response to the Jordan attacks.

The incident underscores the expanding geographic risk to U.S. forces deployed across the Middle East and adds political pressure on the Trump administration as it contends with escalating hostilities.

"Our hearts go out to these families," a Pentagon spokesperson said.

The U.S. has now recorded 17 military fatalities since the start of the Iran‑U.S. war, highlighting the growing human cost of the broader regional conflict.
