Marco Rubio’s State Dept Report Labels Cuba as Hub of U.S. Radical Leftism

On July 20, 2026 the U.S. State Department released a 100‑page report titled “Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio called Cuba the “leading sponsor of radical leftism” and the document linked at least 43 U.S. politicians, activists and organizations to Havana. Named entities include New York and Los Angeles mayors, members of Congress such as Maxine Waters, Ilhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley, the Amazon Labor Union founder Christian Smalls, journalists Amy Goodman and Hasan Piker, and groups like the Democratic Socialists of America, CODEPINK, the National Lawyers Guild, the Venceremos Brigade and Black Lives Matter. The report’s “evidence” consists mainly of visits to Cuba, solidarity statements and opposition to the U.S. blockade.

The House Ways and Means Committee subsequently subpoenaed anti‑imperialist groups—including The People’s Forum, BreakThrough News and the Tricontinental Institute—for their finances, framing the action as a tax inquiry but widely seen as part of a broader effort to label socialist and anti‑war movements as terrorist. Cuban diplomats interviewed in Mexico, including Ambassador Eugenio Martínez and Envoy Johana Tablada, condemned the report as a manipulated reinterpretation of history lacking concrete proof, arguing it serves to justify harsher U.S. measures against Cuba and progressive organizations.
