US States Report First Human West Nile Virus Cases in 2026

The Salt Lake County Health Department confirmed the county’s first human West Nile virus infection of 2026, noting the patient is expected to recover. Statewide mosquito testing in Utah has identified the virus in 296 samples, a sharp rise from previous years, prompting officials to urge residents to use EPA‑registered repellents, wear protective clothing and eliminate standing water.

The Maryland Department of Health also reported the state’s first human case this year, located in the Capital Region. While patient details remain private, officials highlighted that up to 80% of infections are asymptomatic and advised similar mosquito‑bite prevention measures. Maryland recorded 23 confirmed human cases in 2025, underscoring the seasonal variability of West Nile virus activity across the United States.
