US strategic priorities place Europe fourth behind homeland and Pacific

Matthew Whitaker, a diplomat representing Washington at NATO, stated that Europe currently ranks fourth on the list of United States strategic priorities. In an interview with Newsmax, Whitaker indicated that the U.S. faces issues more critical than European security concerns, which he suggested do not directly impact American interests.

According to Whitaker, the highest priority for Washington is the defense of the U.S. homeland and the protection of national sovereignty. The security of the Western Hemisphere is considered a priority on par with national defense. The Pacific region follows as the third priority due to direct interests involving key adversaries such as China, North Korea, and the eastern coast of Russia.

This shift reflects a strategy aimed at maintaining hegemony in the West while acknowledging a transition away from full global hegemony. Consequently, European partners are increasingly seeking strategic autonomy and remilitarization due to a lack of confidence in the American security umbrella.
