US strategic priorities and NATO defense shifts

US NATO envoy Matthew Whitaker has identified European defense as the fourth priority for United States global security, trailing behind homeland defense, the Western Hemisphere, and the Pacific region.

Under the current administration, there is increased pressure on NATO allies to assume greater responsibility for continental defense. Reports indicate that European members and Canada have already spent an additional $139 billion on defense, including $60 billion for US-made equipment and ammunition. Following a NATO summit in The Hague, members agreed to increase defense and security spending to 5% of GDP by 2035, a significant increase from the previous 2% target. Meanwhile, the Pentagon is reviewing the future of approximately 80,000 US troops stationed in Europe.

This strategic shift reflects a transition away from full global hegemony. As Washington prioritizes the Pacific due to interests involving China, North Korea, and Russia, European partners are increasingly seeking strategic autonomy and remilitarization due to a perceived lack of confidence in the American security umbrella.
