U.S. Supreme Court blocks Trump's order to end birthright citizenship

The U.S. Supreme Court issued a 6‑3 ruling that declared former President Donald Trump's executive order, signed on Jan. 20, 2025, to eliminate birthright citizenship illegal. The order sought to strip automatic U.S. nationality from children born on American soil to foreign‑national parents, regardless of their legal status. The Court held that the 14th Amendment’s Citizenship Clause protects this right, preserving citizenship for an estimated 250,000 newborns each year who would otherwise have been denied it.

Trump had argued that the policy was needed to curb so‑called "birth tourism," but the justices found no constitutional basis for the change. The decision marks the second major Trump‑era initiative this year overturned by the Court and leaves open the possibility of future legislative attempts to modify the citizenship rule.
