U.S. Supreme Court issues rulings on voting rights, birthright citizenship and women's sports

The U.S. Supreme Court wrapped up its term with a series of decisions that reshape major domestic policies. The Court narrowed key provisions of the Voting Rights Act, allowed the government to terminate temporary protected status for Haitians and Syrians, and reaffirmed that the 14th Amendment guarantees birthright citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil. NAACP general counsel Kristen Clarke said the rulings expose “harsh winds of discrimination and hatred” to vulnerable communities.

In separate cases, the Court upheld state laws in Idaho and West Virginia that bar biological males from competing in women’s sports, finding the statutes consistent with Title IX and the Equal Protection Clause. The decisions were unanimous across the bench, including the three liberal justices, and signal that those state restrictions are now constitutionally protected.
