U.S. Supreme Court lets Alabama use Republican‑favored congressional map

The U.S. Supreme Court granted Alabama’s emergency appeal and ordered the state to use the congressional map it adopted three years ago, which gives Republicans a clear advantage and provides a majority‑Black population in only one of the state’s seven districts. The ruling overturns a lower‑court injunction that had found the map intentionally discriminated against Black voters. Governor Kay Ivey confirmed the map will be used for special primary elections in August.

The decision comes amid a broader Republican push to redraw districts after the Court’s recent ruling in Louisiana that weakened the federal Voting Rights Act. Three liberal justices dissented. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund warned the ruling “gives cover to Alabama and others to deliberately and openly discriminate against Black voters.”
