US Supreme Court to rule on Alabama congressional map dispute

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall told Newsmax that he expects the U.S. Supreme Court to restore the state’s 2023 congressional map, which he says would allow an additional Republican representative. He warned that lower courts have overstepped by ordering the creation of a minority‑opportunity district, which he calls a Democratic district and says violates Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.

The plaintiffs who sued to block the map submitted a response to the Supreme Court arguing that the map is intentionally discriminatory against Black voters and that lifting the injunction would create election chaos. They highlighted that a state holiday on June 1 left only a few hours to reassign voters before absentee ballots were due, making compliance impossible. The Supreme Court has not yet stayed the injunction, leaving the deadline for any changes extremely tight.

Both sides await the Court’s decision, which will determine whether Alabama can use its preferred map for the upcoming elections.
