Following a Supreme Court ruling that invalidated several tariffs imposed under the Trump administration, the U.S. government has begun issuing massive refunds. U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported paying $100 billion in tariff refunds as of July 31, with total required refunds estimated to exceed $160 billion.

While the funds are being returned to the importers and businesses that originally paid the levies, consumers who faced higher prices due to these tariffs are largely not receiving any compensation. While shipping companies such as UPS, FedEx, and DHL have pledged to pass refunds to customers, many other retailers have not.

In response, consumers are pursuing legal action. Attorneys for various plaintiffs have filed motions to centralize multiple class action lawsuits against major retailers, including Amazon, Target, Costco, Shein, and Temu, in an Illinois court. These suits allege that retailers have been unjustly enriched by retaining profits that resulted from shifting the economic burden of unlawful tariffs onto consumers.
