United States 25% tariff on Brazil hits key industries
On 22 July 2026 the United States applied a 25 % tariff on a wide range of Brazilian products under Section 301 of the Trade Act, with a further 12.5 % surcharge for a forced‑labour investigation that can raise the total duty to 37.5 % on some items. The measure covers roughly 4,000 products worth about US$11 billion, or 26 % of Brazil’s exports to the United States, and has already contributed to a 13 % drop in those exports in the first half of 2026 – a loss of around US$2.6 billion.
The Brazilian government is studying support actions, including a provisional measure modelled on the Brazil Soberano program and possible expansion of export‑credit lines, to mitigate the impact on producers and families. Finance Minister Dario Durigan said the administration will negotiate with affected sectors if the tariffs are confirmed.
Brazil is also seeking alternative markets. South Korean President Lee Jae‑myung visited Brazil and signed five pre‑cooperation agreements on critical minerals and rare earths. Industry Minister Márcio Elias Rosa travelled to India for a trade mission aimed at expanding Brazilian presence in the Indian market. Analysts note that the BRICS bloc could provide a longer‑term outlet for displaced exports.
