US tornado activity mapped daily, showing seasonal peaks and fatalities

More than 1,000 tornadoes touch down across the United States each year, causing billions of dollars in damage and an average of about 70 deaths annually. Peak activity occurs in the spring and early summer, especially in the Deep South, Great Plains and Midwest.

The National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center log reports in real time, and a daily map plots preliminary tornado reports from the past seven days. The map highlights clusters in the Midwest, Plains and South, illustrating the seasonal concentration of severe storms.
