U.S. Trade Representative Greer defends Trump tariffs, says they boost US trade position

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer defended President Donald Trump’s extensive tariff program, saying it has strengthened America’s leverage in trade talks with countries such as India, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Indonesia and Japan. Greer argued the tariffs have helped narrow the trade deficit, encouraged reshoring of manufacturing, and raised wages for U.S. workers. He acknowledged that the Supreme Court struck down a large portion of the earlier tariff regime but insisted the administration will pursue new duties through alternative legal avenues.

Greer also signaled that the temporary 10 % global levy will expire, and the United States is preparing fresh tariffs aimed at forced‑labour concerns that could affect up to 60 trading partners. New measures include a 50 % tariff on select Canadian goods and a 25 % duty on certain Brazilian products. The administration says these actions are intended to pressure partners to open markets to U.S. firms and improve trade balances.

Overall, Greer portrayed the tariff strategy as a successful “America First” effort to protect U.S. industry, agriculture and workers while negotiating new trade agreements worldwide.
