U.S. Treasury removes General François Olenga from sanctions list
The United States Department of the Treasury has removed retired General François Olenga from its Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List (SDN List). The decision, updated by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on September 23, 2026, also lifts sanctions on his associated entities, including Safari Beach and the Safari Club.
Olenga’s lawyer, Aimé Kilolo Musamba, stated that the removal follows a nine-year legal battle to challenge what he described as unfounded accusations. The lifting of these restrictions allows for the reactivation of previously frozen assets and enables Olenga’s businesses to resume commercial activities and international partnerships, specifically with the United States.
The decision is viewed as a significant development for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, potentially signaling a renewal of economic relations and investment opportunities between Washington and the country.
