US Treasury Returns $22 Billion in Tariff Revenue to Importers

The U.S. Treasury Department announced the first partial return of tariff revenue, sending approximately $22 billion back to companies that paid duties on imported goods. The refund, roughly equal to a month’s worth of tariff collections, follows a Supreme Court ruling that declared former President Donald Trump’s tariff regime unlawful under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The court’s decision forced the administration to unwind the tariffs, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bates confirmed the repayment will be made to all importers affected.

The refunded amount is part of an estimated $166 billion collected from tariffs since the policy’s inception. Treasury officials said the return could help narrow the federal budget deficit, which had fallen by about $1.25 trillion in the first six months of the fiscal year, though analysts note the overall fiscal impact remains uncertain.
