US Treasury Secretary signals potential future financial aid for Argentina

United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has indicated the possibility of future financial interventions to support Argentina. During an interview, Bessent stated, “Could we do it again? Of course,” when asked about potential future support for the nation.

Bessent defended a 2025 currency swap agreement, noting that the intervention helped stabilize Argentine markets during periods of exchange rate tension prior to legislative elections. He characterized President Javier Milei as “a great ally of the United States” and argued that such economic security measures serve as a pillar of national security. He also noted that the previous swap, which included a line of up to $20 billion, allowed the U.S. to earn interest through a fully guaranteed arrangement.

In Argentina, Economy Minister Luis Caputo has presented a $72 billion coverage scheme to investors to manage exchange market pressures. This strategy includes currency agreements and international reserve accumulation. The previous $2.5 billion utilized from the U.S. line was reportedly repaid before the end of 2025, generating $17.7 million in interest for the United States.
