U.S. Treasury yields hit 24-year highs amid hawkish Fed policy

U.S. Treasury yields have reached their highest levels in over two decades, driven by a hawkish policy shift from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh. Following remarks at Jackson Hole and a subsequent rate hike in September, the market has pivoted toward expecting an aggressive tightening cycle, with inflation projected to remain above target until 2029.

This surge in yields has caused bond prices to fall, resulting in significant unrealized losses for investors holding fixed-income securities. Financial professionals suggest that these losses may provide an opportunity for tax-loss harvesting, where investors sell securities at a loss to offset capital gains in other parts of their portfolios.

However, experts warn that investors must navigate the IRS wash-sale rule, which prevents claiming losses if a substantially identical security is purchased within a 30-day window. While the market rout mirrors the volatility seen in 2022 and 2023, advisors note that the current high-yield environment also allows for portfolio rebalancing and reinvestment at higher rates for those with longer time horizons.
