US Treasury yields reach 20-year highs amid growth
US Treasury yields have experienced significant increases, with the ten-year yield reaching its highest level in two decades. This rise is primarily driven by higher real interest rates rather than a surge in inflation expectations, as the market anticipates a period of more expensive borrowing.
Fidelity has suggested that the Federal Reserve may be too lenient, arguing that current rates remain below the neutral level required to maintain stable inflation. The asset manager noted that inflation has remained above the 2% target for over five years, suggesting the Fed may need to tighten policy further.
Despite the rise in yields, equity markets have shown relative resilience, largely because the rate increases are being fueled by sustained economic growth and demand. However, volatility has increased during periods of abrupt rate shifts, and the simultaneous rise in oil prices is adding pressure to risky assets.
